Insulation and Thermal Insulation

Αt Smart Building we carry out insulation and thermal insulation work, for basements, roofs, metal load bearing structures, exteriors and interiors.

Insulation is an integral investment for any building project, securing many benefits in both money saving and standard of living. Thermal insulation, specifically, constitutes essential protection for any building or particular parts of it – and is installed both on the exteriors and the interiors. Materials used to  insulate buildings are particularly lightweight and have the capacity to entrain air. These characteristics offer maximum insulation efficiency – since air is actually the most basic thermally insulative material available in nature.

The benefits deriving from thermal insulation are many and impressive: they offer protection to the building itself, as well as to the people who use it. The most fundamental advantages achieved through thermal insulation of houses or commercial spaces, include:

  1. Protection from thermal expansion and contraction that cause cracking in building material.
  2. Avoidance of water vapor creation in the interiors and on building material. Water vapor constitutes an important agent of corrosion and mold development.
  3. Enhancement of a building’s structural resistance.
  4. Improvement of the building’s aesthetics.
  5. Improvement of living conditions.
  6. Increase in energy efficiency, resulting in decreased consumption of fuel and subsequently increased cost saving.

In broad lines, insulation can be installed both in the building’s exteriors and interiors. Insulating basements, roofs, metal load bearing structures, exteriors and interiors is one of the most sought after types of work assigned to the specialist staff of Smart Building. Basement Insulation

Basement insulation is an integral part of the work applied to thermally insulate a building in full. It encompasses waterproofing and sealing of the exterior walls that lie below ground surface.

Truth be told, a basement is a very important space in a house or in commercial premises. It is space that can be utilized in many different ways, not just for storage. It is a pity that many owners do not place sufficient emphasis on properly insulating their basements. As a result of this neglect, basement spaces tend to be hotbeds of damp and molds. With appropriate basement insulation, we not only secure efficient thermal insulation of the given space, but we also mitigate the danger of such negative effects appearing.

Focused on offering top-notch services, on using all suitable insulating material and on utilizing the best thermal insulating techniques, our staff will make sure to deliver the optimal result for your basement. The benefits derived will include:

  • Protection against damp and mold
  • Avoidance of wall bulging
  • Securing high quality of air
  • Mitigation of energy losses, securing proper temperatures

Roof Insulation

In recent years there is a rising demand for roof insulation. A particularity we face in roof insulation is that we need to not only deliver thermal insulation but also secure excellent sealing and protection from weather hazards. This is the main reason that the materials used are thick, lightweight and characterized by their great durability.

The criterion applied when choosing the insulation material is dependent on many variables. Most important of which being, of course, its thermal conductivity coefficient and the speed in which it absorbs water. Our objective is to avoid absorption of water by the insulation material, since this would inhibit the thermal insulation’s efficiency. Of course, the addition of a sealing layer will offer increased protection from water.

There are two ways to install roof insulation. Conventional systems involve a layer of sealing positioned above a layer of thermal insulation. Inverted roof insulation systems reverse the order of layers. Conventional systems are generally regarded as more reliable, however, according to particular conditions, the use of inverted systems might be considered necessary.

By choosing to employ the services of Smart Building, not only will you insulate your roof according to the highest standards and specifications, but you will also achieve maximum energy saving and optimal protection of your building against cracking and other sorts of wear.

Insulation of metal load bearing structures

Insulating metal load bearing structures is yet another important task assigned to our staff, while constructing a house or any other type of building. Such work encompasses covering the steel columns with insulation materials made of expanded polystyrene.

This secures proper insulation of a building, right from its foundations. As we have already mentioned, the advantages provided through sufficiently insulating a building are immense. We will make sure to deliver all of them.

Insulation of interior and exterior walls

Insulation of walls, whether they be interior or exterior, is considered essential work for every building construction. Furthermore, even if such work was not applied during the original construction of a building, it is considered desirable to carry it out in existing residences or commercial spaces. Besides, the enhancement of any space’s energy efficiency and the reduction of fuel consumption and costs are imperative nowadays.

Insulation of exterior walls demands installing up-to-date materials of high thermal insulation capability, that not only offer protection against extreme high or low temperatures, but also contribute drastically to the enhancement of the building’s resistance against wear, including cracking.

Our specialized staff is qualified to study and comprehend the particular needs of every specific space, and recommend the most suitable and efficient insulation solutions. In cases of lack of sufficient space, or of adjacency of neighboring buildings, exterior insulation systems can not be applied. Our staff then informs the client and proceeds to install interior insulation, instead. Our objective is to always insulate the whole building, in order to deliver optimal conditions to its residents.

Last but not least, it must be pointed out that insulation of masonry may differ in type, as follows.

Insulation of brickwork

Insulation of brickwork is realized by installing extruded or expanded polystyrene in the gap between the two wallings, of which each wall consists. Sealing is achieved by the application of roughcast and color. This is a usual task we take on, since brickwork is the most common type of masonry. Thanks to our year-long experience and our staff’s excellent professional training, we are able to deliver an exceptional result in every insulation we apply.

Insulation of walls built with Ytong/Alphablock

Building masonry with Ytong/Alphablock is a very popular building method, because the very building material used, provides the necessary thermal insulation, as well as soundproofing. This means that no other insulation material needs be applied, with the exception of roughcast and paint that will act as sealing.

Insulation of walls made with 3D panel building system

As is the case with Ytong/Alphablock, masonry built with 3D panels does not require the use of any additional insulation material. The reason being that the panel, itself, is built in a way that delivers the appropriate thermal insulation. Sealing is again provided through applying roughcast and color.

Insulation of walls made of cement bonded fibreboard

Finally, insulation of cement bonded fiberboard requires a different approach. In this case thermal insulation, as well as soundproofing, are realized by using extruded polystyrene or mineral wool. By chosing, as we always do, insulation material of top-notch quality, we secure immense advantages for your living or working space.
